for [...] bucks, this is a useful head; it is solid and holds my Canon 40D steady. The problem I had was with the tightening screw; the base of my manfrotto tripod has a larder diameter than the bottom of the ball head, so the tightening screw hit the tripod base -- the solution was to take the screw out and reposition the lever so it wouldn't hit the tripod (just be careful not to lose the little spring inside). I may upgrade to a classier head some day, such as one that has a separate control for panning, but for a simple ball head that holds tight (and has bubble level and quick release), this works great.
Update:
a comment on my review mentioned that the lever can be repositioned without taking it off, which is true; that helps a lot.
However, one downside I have found with this head is this: if I am walking around in the woods with the tripod over my shoulder and my camera on the tripod, attached to the head with the quick release, the quick release lever starts to open up from the weight of my 40D. It's less an issue with lighter cameras, but beware of carrying heavier cameras in this fasion -- you'll need to take it off the head in order to walk around.

It is a solid ball head. The product description says they can provide a step-up adapter for 1/4" screws, but actually customers need to pay for that. After several e-mails back and forth arguing the adapter should have been included, the seller sent me an adapter without charge. It would have been a five star if the adapter had been included in the first place.

This seems to be a fairly good ball head, although because of my inexperience with ball heads I'm not sure it can be described as "heavy duty". I had some initial problems with it because one of the hex head set screws became loose fairly soon after I started using it, but that problem was solved with a drop of lock-tite and an allen-head wrench. It was scary before I fixed the problem because my camera almost came off while hiking with it attached to the ball head and tripod. Another screw, a phillips head set screw also became loose. Again, after tightening this screw all was ok. But, these screws should never have come loose in ordinary use. They are meant to be tight and to remain tight.
One other minor problem is in regard to the quick release plate. There is a very tiny amount of play (almost imperceptible) between the QR plate and the ball head. It doesn't seem to affect picture taking, but I plan to do something to eliminate the play. I like the way the QR plate locks on with a separate locking pin.
After fixing the screws all was ok and I enjoyed using the ball head. However, my camera is a Canon 30D with a battery pack attached. That, plus the lens, makes for a fairly heavy load. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for anything heavier.
The hall head comes in a no-name plain card board box (although well packed), with no model number either on the box or on the ball head. There is absolutely nothing on the ball head except "Made in China". I suppose that's why it is so inexpensive.
On other additional comment after using this ball head for a couple of weeks.-The bulls-eye level bubble has come out, and disappeared I know not where. It apparently was not glued in....just pushed in....and was not a tight fit. So far I haven't found it. Oh well, I suppose I can buy another and this time glue it in.
I suppose, after finding the loose screws and level bubble, I would now rate it down one star, but it is a very solid ball head.
